Tri-Rivers Internet E-Mail Services
Introduction
The new and improved email server is in place. This is the place to get the information necessary to understand the operation and the links to get to the appropriate place. The most important change affects the handling of the spam. Please check that first. The second important change is that SquirrelMail has replaced SqWebMail. SquirrelMail will be used by you to check the new "Spam" folder created by the previously mentioned spam-handling change.
The other changes will require some configuration changes to Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird, but these will not be required immediately.

Spam and Anti-Virus Services
Behind the scenes, these services have not changed much. The SpamAssassin program has some new tests being applied to the incoming email, which has been fine tuned in the last three weeks and seems to be catching upwards of 95% of the spam this past week.
The big, new change is that the email being marked as spam will now be moved into a spam folder kept on Tri-Rivers server. This will provide a much cleaner appearing mailbox from here forward. The mail marked as spam will be available for a specified amount of time (currently 30 days) before being automatically deleted.
There will now be two folders available via IMAP. These are called "Spam" and "Spam+10". The "Spam" folder holds that email that scores between 5.0 and 9.9 in the SpamAssassin program. The "Spam+10" folder holds that email that scores a 10.0 and above.
Squirrelmail will most likely be the easiest method to check your spam folders regularly.
The whitelist is still a valuable method of preventing good email from being marked as spam. Please send an email to staff@tri.net with the email address of the sender to have them added to the whitelist.
IMAP Server
IMAP is a method that leaves the email on the Tri-Rivers server. It shows you the sender, subject and other information, allowing you to view the email, as well as all of the other regular email functions. The web mail interfaces typically use the IMAP features of a server, but Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird can all be set up to use IMAP instead of POP3.
Squirrelmail
Tri-Rivers new web interface, Squirrelmail, works very similar to the previous web interface. There are many new options available. There are two important differences. The first is that the username field now requires the full email address. The second is that the size column needs to be added in the "index options" area.
Contact staff@tri.net to have your old "Sent Mail" made available to you. The address book can not be moved directly, but we can provide a listing of the contents if desired.
POP3 Post Office Protocol
POP3 is the method most often used by Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird email programs. With POP3, email is typically removed from the Tri-Rivers server and downloaded onto your computer as a batch. If the entire batch is not retrieved, none of the email is deleted, and is sent the next time you attempt to retrieve email.
SMTP Simple Mail Transport Protocol
Tri-Rivers SMTP server now supports authenticated sending from anywhere. This means that with proper configuration of your Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird, you can use these programs while traveling. Please check back for detailed instructions on the configurations necessary, or give me a call. At some point in the future, all users will be required to switch to Authenticate SMTP.
